Ignite The West

April 26th, 2010

Ignite is coming to the West of Ireland. Ignite talks, where presenters get 20 slides and five minutes to make their point, are for anyone who wants to laugh, talk and be inspired and are held worldwide. Ignite the West starts Friday May 7th at 8pm at the Mill Times hotel, Westport. We hope to see some of you there for what should be a very enjoyable evening.

To give you a flavour of what Ignite talks can be about, I have included for your viewing my pal Ciaran Simms presenting his talk  ”Pedestrian Crash Safety: a triumph of design in bioengineering” at Ignite Dublin #1.

Ada Lovelace Day

March 24th, 2010

Professor Jane Grimson

Today, March 24th, is Ada Lovelace Day,  an international day of blogging to celebrate the achievements of women inada_lovelace technology and science. Ada Lovelace is regarded as one of the world’s first computer programmers having  written the world’s first computer programmes for the Analytical Engine, a general-purpose machine that Charles Babbage had invented. I first came across the great lady while studying the programming language “Ada” in my second year of Computer Science at Trinity College Dublin. You can find out more about Ada at the official Ada Lovelace Day website.

My contribution to the day is to write about Professor Jane Grimson. She was the first female engineering graduate of Trinity College Dublin in 1970. I had the privilege of joining her research group KDEG,  in 1991 and acquiring my MSc. in computer science a few years later. As well as inspiring me, she has also inspired my sister, also an engineering graduate and now a lecturer at TCD.

Currently Director of the Centre of Health Informatics, Trinity College Dublin and Acting Director of Health Information, HIQA , she was recently awarded the O’Moore Medal by the Health Informatics Society of Ireland (HISI)  in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development of healthcare informatics in Ireland and throughout the world.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

March 8th, 2010

It has come to our attention that Seachtain na Gaeilge is being celebrated from 5th to 17th of March. We at Synergy Network would like to provide you with a  couple of phrases “as Gaeilge” that you might like to use during the working day. I apologise in advance for any spelling or grammar mistakes – my Irish is just not as excellent as it used to be. Please feel free to add your comments below…
